South Coast - Kangaroo Valley

Kangaroo Valley is one of Australia’s most beautiful valleys with a tranquil river, verdant farms, enchanting wilderness and a delightful village. Two hours’ drive from both Sydney and Canberra, the valley in the Shoalhaven region of NSW is a popular destination for kayaking, canoeing, golf and wine tasting.

The Kangaroo River flows through the secluded valley, nestled between the Southern Highlands and the South Coast. Explore the river in a kayak from Kangaroo Valley Kayaks or Kangaroo Valley Safaris Kayak and Canoe Hire. 

Dating back to 1870, the main street retains a country charm that extends to its tea rooms and the Friendly Inn Hotel, a pub. Be sure to stop in at the Kangaroo Valley Pie Shop at Barrengarry Old Store. The pies are made fresh daily in the shop. For sweet handmade delights, visit the Kangaroo Valley Fudge House.

Among the many other things to do and see, discover fascinating colonial history at the Kangaroo Valley Pioneer Village Museum and see the historic Hampden Bridge, Australia’s last surviving wooden suspension bridge with four large sandstone turrets. Enjoy horseriding and special events, such as the three-day Kangaroo Folk Festival.

Take a short drive to Yarrawa Estate, in Upper Kangaroo River, for wine tasting. Taste delicious local olives and olive oil of Kangaroo Valley Olives, which offers cooking classes and private group tours. You can also hone your culinary skills using local produce at Flavours of the Valley, a cooking school.

Gorgeous waterfalls are less than 20km from Kangaroo Valley — the spectacular Fitzroy Falls and the pretty Gerringong Falls. There are also some great bushwalks around the falls. For a waterside barbecue and picnic, drive to Tallowa Dam, home to the largest fish lift of its kind in Australia.
