Southern Highlands - New South Wales NSW holiday
Discover the rural delights of the beautiful Southern Highlands, from cool-climate wines and fresh seasonal produce to gorgeous gardens, spectacular waterfalls and wonderful national parks. Enjoy idyllic walks in the fresh country air, visit cellar doors for wine tasting, and explore colonial heritage.
Getting to this picturesque region in Country NSW is easy. The drive from Sydney to Bowral is 90 minutes and under two hours from Canberra. You can travel by train, too. Perfect for day trips, weekend escapes and longer sojourns, you’ll find many things to do and tours throughout the year.
You can pick up maps and invaluable local knowledge at the Southern Highlands Welcome Centre in Mittagong, a charming town with fine colonial buildings and specialty stores. The towns and villages, vineyards and wineries, and natural wonders, are all within easy driving distance of each other.
Bowral is home to the annual Tulip Time Festival and the Bradman Museum and International Cricket Hall of Fame, which commemorates legendary Australian batsman Sir Don Bradman. A short drive southwest is historic Berrima and the convict-built Surveyor General Inn, a sandstone pub.
For breathtaking wilderness, visit the magnificent Fitzroy Falls in the vast Morton National Park. Near the village of Robertson is the splendid Belmore Falls. There are enjoyable bushwalks, such as the Lovers Walking Track, and exhilarating cycling trails near Bundanoon, a tourist destination since the 1920s.
The food and wine experiences are delicious. Deep volcanic soils support a range of produce, from beef and dairy to wine grapes and truffles. The high altitude is perfect for cool-climate wines, with plenty of wineries to visit. There are acclaimed restaurants too, such as Biota Dining and Eschalot.
